The world of rocks and minerals is full of stones that have protective properties. Nearly all black stones have protective properties that can shield the person wearing or carrying it. However, one of the best in an all-around grounding and protective capacity is black tourmaline.

Tourmalines can come in a variety of colors ranging from red, purple, blue, green, brown, and even pink. Today, however, I am focusing just on the black variety of tourmaline. Black tourmaline is also known as Schorl or Aphrizite. In raw form, it appears to be made up of long, needle-like spikes that are bound together. This wonder-stone acts like a sponge for negative energies in your home or on your person and yet never needs to be cleansed.

According to Melody, in her book, “Love is in the Earth”, tourmaline relates to all of the chakras in the body, balance the anima and animus (male and female energies), assists in dissipating fear, promoting understanding, balancing the mind and instilling a sense self-confidence.

All of these things are especially useful if you are feeling the negative energy of other people or situations. The black tourmaline, in particular, has a way of deflecting those negative energies and rendering them inert. Black tourmaline also has a reputation to help with motivation and creativity. Malachite is and has been one of the world’s most popular stones. In Ancient Egypt it was used in the making of jewelry, as decorative objects, for adorning the coffins of kings and queens, This stone was even crushed to make a pigment to paint the walls of temples and tombs.

The deep green of malachite is especially appealing and works very well in connection to work with the heart chakra. According to Melody, author of “Love is in the Earth”, numerologically, this stone resonates to a 9 vibration. She goes on to say that Malachite is an exceptional stone of transformation and can assist in connecting to and the “transfer of sacred information leading to a spiritual evolution.”

Malachite is known to help boost insight into disorders within the mind, body, or spirit. This crystal can even act as an “Opener of the Way” toward personal goals and helps us to take responsibility and act with integrity in all things.

Malachite is a fantastic stone of purification. It is ruled by the Earth element, is ruled by the planet Venus, and clearly resonates feminine energy. Malachite is traditionally regarded as a stone to carry when traveling and can protect those who wear it from calamity while they are away from home.

As beautiful as malachite is, it needs to be handled with care. Because of some of the chemical compounds found within the stone, it is a good idea to only purchase or work with polished stones. Breathing the dust of malachite can prove to be toxic. If you want to make a gem elixir, with this stone, Jude Hall author of “The Crystal Bible” recommends that you first place the stone inside a glass and then place that glass inside a glass vessel filled with spring water.

When working with malachite, it is particularly effective when placed on the Third Eye and the Heart Chakra. Malachite can cause powerful reactions wherever it is placed. However, if its placement causes heart palpitations, it is recommended that you remove it and replace the malachite stone with a piece of clear crystal.

Azurite & Malachite

One of the most powerful pairings of stones is that of azurite and malachite. Azurite, which is often called the “Stone of Heaven” helps in connecting to the higher self and facilitates the development of intuition through the opening of the third eye. Azurite is an excellent stone to connect with for enhancing creativity, and in aligning all of the chakras.

Perhaps one of the most popular crystals of all amethyst. In history, this stone was almost as valuable as diamonds, Today, however, it’s easy to find an exquisite piece of amethyst without necessarily having to pay a royal ransom for it.

The Properties of Amethyst

Amethyst is a form of quartz crystal that can be found in many different countries around the world including the United States, India, Brazil, Africa, Uruguay, Mexico, Russia, and Siberia. Amethyst color can range from very dark purple that appears almost black, to stones that are a very light lilac hue.

Amethyst is considered a powerful protector that can ward off psychic attacks as well as enhance and protect the higher chakras of the third eye, and the crown. It is fantastic in assisting the wearer to more readily access the ethereal or akashic realms. It is considered a stone of contentment and enhanced spirituality by enhancing the wearer or carrier of the stone to be able to function more effectively between the realms of mind, body, and spirit. According to crystal expert and author, Melody, amethyst can bestow strength, stability, invigoration, and peace. Amethyst has proved itself to be an excellent stone to connect within meditation as well.

This stone’s energy is receptive and is ruled by both the planets Jupiter and Neptune and associated with the element of water. Deities to Whom amethyst is sacred include Dionysus, Bacchus, Diana, Neith, Sekhmet, and Hathor. According to the Bible, amethyst was one of the stones set in the breastplate of the High Priest.

 In antiquity, almost every purple stone was referred to as an “amethyst”, even when it was an entirely different stone. Back in ancient times, amethyst was believed to help aid in sobriety. This comes from a legend of a young nymph named Amethyst who was dedicated to the wine god, Dionysus or Bacchus. When the young woman offered herself to him, he scorned her. The diety’s rejection rendered her heartbroken and it is said that she withered and turned to stone on the spot.

From that time onward, anyone wearing the stone named from this myth would themselves be able to ward off the effects of overindulgence. The ancients even went as far as to serve wine in cups carved of amethyst, which would enhance the color of wine – and make it possible to water down the wine or serve water to guests who were too inebriated to know the difference!
