The Properties of Amethyst
Amethyst is a form of quartz crystal that can be found in many different countries around the world including the United States, India, Brazil, Africa, Uruguay, Mexico, Russia, and Siberia. Amethyst color can range from very dark purple that appears almost black, to stones that are a very light lilac hue.
Amethyst is considered a powerful protector that can ward off psychic attacks as well as enhance and protect the higher chakras of the third eye, and the crown. It is fantastic in assisting the wearer to more readily access the ethereal or akashic realms. It is considered a stone of contentment and enhanced spirituality by enhancing the wearer or carrier of the stone to be able to function more effectively between the realms of mind, body, and spirit. This stone’s energy is receptive and is ruled by both the planets Jupiter and Neptune and associated with the element of water. Deities to Whom amethyst is sacred include Dionysus, Bacchus, Diana, Neith, Sekhmet, and Hathor. According to the Bible, amethyst was one of the stones set in the breastplate of the High Priest.
In antiquity, almost every purple stone was referred to as an “amethyst”, even when it was an entirely different stone. Back in ancient times, amethyst was believed to help aid in sobriety. This comes from a legend of a young nymph named Amethyst who was dedicated to the wine god, Dionysus or Bacchus. When the young woman offered herself to him, he scorned her. The diety’s rejection rendered her heartbroken and it is said that she withered and turned to stone on the spot.
From that time onward, anyone wearing the stone named from this myth would themselves be able to ward off the effects of overindulgence. The ancients even went as far as to serve wine in cups carved of amethyst, which would enhance the color of wine – and make it possible to water down the wine or serve water to guests who were too inebriated to know the difference!
